Local Information about Fordcombe, Kent

Not many places have former homes to 3 of Henry VIII's wives in the area and 2 of his palaces. I have a map on the wall of the property showing over 50 attractions and days' out within 40 minutes drive. There are too many to list. But if you want to just sit back and relax we have The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wels where you can sit outside at amazing cafés and restaurants and listen to live music in the evenings in the summer. Rosemary Shrager's cookery school has courses there as well as a cafe to sample the fine pastries. There is a Michelin star restaurant at Thackerays in Tunbridge Wells. Four of the top 20 best pubs in Kent are within a 2 miles radius of our property and Larkins local brewery in Chiddingstone produces fine beers, though there are also several micro breweries like Black Cat whose beer is available at selected inns. To walk this off there are more miles of footpaths through the Garden of England than I could list and all accessible from our property. From here you can walk the Sussex Border Path, the Tunbridge Wells 27 mile Circular Walk, the High Weald Walk or stroll along the Eden river valley. There are bird reserves and the Ashdown Forest for nature lovers. The Spa Valley railway at the bottom of the hill has steam train rides from Tunbridge Wells to Eridge all year round.

Just a 10 minute drive from Royal Tunbridge Wells, the lovely Georgian spa town is well worth a visit and the shopping is extensive full of boutiques and individual shops! Or why not take a day trip to France, the Euro star Train from Ashford or the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone will transport you to a French location in record time - just don't forget to pack your passport!

Also a 20 minute drive away is Tonbridge, a thriving town with an excellent 42 minute train service to London Charing Cross or to the seaside at Hastings! Tonbridge Castle with its wonderful Gatehouse, takes you back almost 740 years! Set in landscaped gardens with picturesque grounds overlooking the River Medway, Tonbridge Castle is reputedly England's finest example of a Norman motte and bailey castle. Tours are available from the Tourist Information Centre. There is a great bookshop located in this part of Tonbridge, Mr Books, in a beautiful medieval building. Tonbridge even has its own theatre, The Oast Theatre inside the 19th Century Kentish oast house, with 10 productions every year!

The beautiful and enchanting Penshurst Place and Gardens is 5 minutes away, another exciting day out for you to enjoy during your stay at The Bothy. With plenty of activities such as crafts, mazes, garden trails and an adventure playground the whole family will enjoy this visit. Furthermore, dine out at any of the three fantastic places during your visit to the historical home, including The Garden Restaurant, The Porcupine Pantry and The Kiosk.

Under 15 minutes is Hever Castle, another charming day out for you to discover. Tour and learn of the 700 years of history this double-moated, magnificent 13th century castle has to offer. Hever Castle, once the home of Anne Boleyn, also has an audio tour for you to experience during your visit, whilst you walk around all the stunning gardens and admire the large lake. Take the children to go explore the adventure playgrounds and let them roam around the beautiful outdoors. As a real treat in the summer months (weather permitting), this castle boasts an exciting water maze for all the family's entertainment. Furthermore, one can hire a little boat during certain times of year, another fun aspect to Hever Castle.

Bedgebury Forest and National Park is only 30 minutes' drive away, which is a stunning area of natural beauty miles of walks and cycling paths, including 'Go Ape,' a hugely fun activity where you can swing through the trees. Nearby Bewl water is the largest area of inland water in the South-East. If you are a water sports enthusiast, this is the place to visit with lots of activities including sailing, canoeing and wind-surfing. Bowles Outdoor Centre, is situated just 10 minutes away where you can learn to rock climb, build rafts and even ski on the 2 dry ski slopes.
