Local Information about Canterbury, Kent

There is so much to do and see in Canterbury that you could easily spend your entire holiday in the city, visiting the famous Cathedral, wandering through the cobbled streets and taking in the historic architecture of the medieval street and the city walls. It's best appreciated by strolling around on foot so make sure you have flat shoes and the time to spend a few pleasurable hours to enjoy all the sights. Rest a while in the numerous gardens that are dotted around or take a punt down the river Stour on one of the many River tours, and if you want spooky evening entertainment then find out more about Canterbury's dark side on a Ghost Tour.

If fine dining is your passion then you've got plenty to choose from with Michael Caine's exquisite restaurant at ABode, treat yourself to the taster menu or if you are looking booked into the Marlowe then why not try pre-theatre dining. There is something to satisfy all taste buds; whether you want a Michelin star gourmet meal, a romantic meal for two or a meal with a party atmosphere, there is a venue to suit everyone.

Café culture is alive and well in Canterbury so take a rest from exploring to sit down, relax and watch the world go by in one of the numerous cafés or tea shops serving home baked food and a cup of English tea. There is also the annual Canterbury Food Festival giving you the chance to try new things and enjoy fresh local produce.

No trip to Canterbury would be complete without visiting the Marlowe Theatre, named after Christopher Marlowe, famous rival of William Shakespeare. Culture vultures flock to the recently rebuilt auditorium, large enough to attract the biggest and the best touring shows and performances.

Kent, once a separate kingdom, and England's oldest county, can trace its history deep into an exciting past. The geography that today means easy access to London and Europe, has for centuries ensured a defensive role. The result is a stunning collection of castles, historic houses and maritime heritage. Rising above the white cliffs and above the port is the mighty Dover Castle which dates back to Henry II in the 1160s and more recently has revealed the deep underground wartime tunnels from the Napoleonic era to the Cold War. Leeds Castle, near Maidstone, is absolutely exquisite, moated, romantic and in 500 acres of parkland - a fabulous day out for all. If you love fairy tale castles then Upnor Castle is a must see. Set on the banks of the river it's a real rarity and was designed to protect the Queen's fleet at nearby Chatham Docks.
As the Garden of England, you will not be surprised to know that Kent boasts glorious, delightfully designed and fragrant country estates and grounds from world-famous destinations such as Penshurst Place and Sissinghurst Castle Garden to the lesser-known gems of Goodnestone Park Gardens and fruit-filled Brogdale.

For days out to the coast, there is a large number of spectacular beaches and bays and nowadays there's a really cool and creative scene going on with the Turner Contemporary gallery at Margate which showcases historical and contemporary works. The harbour towns of Whitstable, Margate and Ramsgate exclude charm and are full of everything you expect from a retro beach holiday. Traditional fish and chip shops, chic eateries and ice-cream parlours evoke nostalgia by the bucket load.

Two very comfortable weeks in this convenient apartment in beautiful Canterbury
March 2016 - Chris & Hazel
Super, comfy and clean apartment – an excellent base for my work related trip as it’s so close to the centre. Nice and quiet in the evenings but only around 5 minutes’ walk to some cool bars & restaurants. It was really helpful to have on-site garage parking. Definitely recommend for a Canterbury city-break or a business trip.
